Kampala Police Arrest Security Guard With 13 Rounds of Ammunition in Intelligence-Led Operation
KAMPALA, Uganda – The Kampala Metropolitan Police have arrested a 36-year-old driver attached to a private security company after recovering 13 rounds of ammunition during an intelligence-led operation in Kawempe Division.
The suspect, identified as Prosper Turinawe, a resident of Kyebando Central, was arrested on June 21, 2026, following information linking him to the alleged possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Intelligence Tip Leads to Arrest
According to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, police received intelligence reports about a man allegedly seen carrying a pistol along Mawanda Road.
Acting on the information, officers from Wandegeya Police Station launched an operation and established that the suspect had been staying at a lodge within the area.
“Officers mounted an operation after receiving information about a man reportedly seen with a pistol on Mawanda Road. Although he initially evaded arrest, further intelligence enabled officers to intercept him at about 6:00 a.m. while in possession of 13 rounds of ammunition,” Owoyesigyire said.
Search Uncovers Military-Style Items
Following the arrest, police conducted a search at Turinawe’s residence in Kyebando Central, where they recovered several items believed to be relevant to the investigation.
The recovered exhibits included approximately 40 spent cartridges of different calibres, black military-style boots, uniforms belonging to a private security company, and additional uniforms from various organizations.
Police said all recovered items have been secured as evidence.
Suspect Charged
Owoyesigyire confirmed that Turinawe is currently being held in police custody and has been charged with possession of government stores.
“The items have been exhibited as evidence. Preliminary findings suggest that the premises occupied by the suspect may have been used to store the recovered items,” he said.
Police Hunt for Missing Firearm
Investigators are now working to establish the origin of the ammunition and other recovered items, as well as trace a firearm that police believe may be connected to the case but has not yet been recovered.
Authorities say the ongoing investigation will help determine whether additional suspects are involved.
“The investigations are ongoing to establish the source of the exhibits and trace the firearm that remains unaccounted for,” Owoyesigyire added.
Court Appearance Pending
Police have indicated that the suspect will be produced before court once investigations are complete.
The arrest comes amid continued security operations targeting illegal possession of firearms, ammunition, and government stores in Kampala and surrounding areas.
