Kenya Counter Terrorism Police Foil Major Al-Shabaab Ramadhan Terror Attack Plot

The Kenya Counter Terrorism Police have foiled a major terror attack allegedly orchestrated by Al-Shabaab targeting civilians during the holy month of Ramadhan.

The development was confirmed on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, by the National Police Service in a brief statement shared on X.

“Plans by the terrorist group Al-Shabaab to kill many Kenyans in Nairobi have once again been foiled by the intelligence agency,” the statement read in part.

Months of Surveillance in Dadaab

According to authorities, months of surveillance and covert intelligence operations uncovered a terror network operating within the Dadaab Refugee Complex.

Security officers recovered a cache of weapons and supplies, including:

  • 600 rounds of ammunition

  • Pistols

  • Grenades

  • Explosives

  • Drugs

Investigators say the weapons were destined for targets in Nairobi.

Planned Ramadhan Attacks and Kidnappings

Police revealed that the suspects intended to execute the attack during Ramadhan, a period marked by large gatherings for prayers and religious observances.

In addition to planned bombings, the group was reportedly exploring the kidnapping of foreigners and the hijacking of vehicles to intensify fear and disruption.

“Nairobi remains safe because of the brave young men and women in our security agencies who spend long hours tracking down dangerous terrorists and criminals,” the police statement added.

Kenyan authorities say security operations remain heightened across the country as investigations continue into the suspected terror cell and its wider network.
