BREAKING: Parliament of Uganda Suspends By-Election for East African Legislative Assembly Representatives

Uganda Parliament Suspends EALA By-Election Nominations Amid Legal Review Request

The Parliament of Uganda has suspended the nomination process for the by-election of Uganda’s representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly, citing the need for further legal review.

The suspension was announced on Saturday, March 28, 2026, by the Clerk to Parliament, Adolf Mwesige Kasaija. The nominations had initially been scheduled to take place on March 30 and 31, 2026, but have now been halted until further notice.

Reason for Suspension

The decision follows a formal request from the Attorney General, Kiryowa Kiwanuka, who asked Parliament for additional time to review a letter concerning the pending by-elections.

The by-election is intended to fill two vacant seats at the East African Legislative Assembly, which arose after former representatives James Kakooza and Dennis Namara were elected to Uganda’s 12th Parliament in the recent general elections.

What Happens Next

Parliament has not indicated when the nomination process will resume, as the legal review remains ongoing. The delay is expected to temporarily affect Uganda’s representation in the regional legislative assembly.

Background

The East African Legislative Assembly is the legislative organ of the East African Community, responsible for debating and passing laws that govern regional integration among member states.

Further updates are expected once the Attorney General completes the review and advises Parliament on the way forward.
