According to a statement released today by Police PRO ACP Kituuma Rusoke, Mukono Police received the drowning report on August 4th, a day after the incident occurred on August 3rd at approximately 5:30 PM.
“Our regional team visited the scene, documented witness accounts, retrieved the body, and conducted a postmortem examination,” said ACP Rusoke.
Kato Diriisa, the school’s designated lifesaver, has been arrested to assist with investigations and could face charges depending on the guidance from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
“We plan to take him to court. The school’s CCTV footage was also reviewed as part of the investigation,” Rusoke added.

The incident has sparked nationwide concern over school safety protocols, especially at institutions with recreational facilities like swimming pools. ACP Rusoke used the opportunity to highlight critical lapses and urged immediate reforms.
⚠️ Key Safety Lessons Highlighted by Police:
- CCTV monitoring in schools is essential for accountability and timely response.
- Lifeguards must not double as coaches or trainers, as this compromises their ability to supervise effectively.
- Institutions must ensure lifeguards are formally trained and certified in lifesaving duties.
- Clear protocols must be established for pool use to avoid overcrowding and lapses in supervision.
“Having a lifeguard on duty is not enough — they must be properly trained and solely focused on safety, not multitasking,” Rusoke emphasized.
The school has not yet released an official statement regarding the incident.
This is a developing story. More details will follow as investigations progress and legal proceedings unfold.
