TOP STORY: UPDF Troops Kill Senior Al-Shabaab Commander in Somalia Ambush
Lower Shabelle, Somalia
Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) deployed under the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) have killed a top Al-Shabaab commander in a major operation near Buulomareer in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region.
The militant leader, Osman Hussein Bune Amiir, believed to be the general commander of Al-Shabaab forces in the area, was neutralized on September 14 during a well-coordinated ambush by UPDF troops from the Buulo Mareer Forward Operating Base (FOB).
Brigadier General Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, the Commander of Sector One, hailed the operation as a “decisive blow against the terrorist group.” He confirmed that the offensive also led to the recovery of critical items including a pistol with three loaded magazines, binoculars, a porch, two mobile phones, and other materials linked to Al-Shabaab operations.
“This operation demonstrates our unwavering commitment, together with our partners, to dismantling Al-Shabaab’s networks and restoring lasting peace and stability in Somalia,” said Brig Gen Ssemwanga.
The commander of the Buulo Mareer FOB, Major David Ogweng, credited the success to strong leadership and continued support from AUSSOM and UPDF command. “Our troops remain determined and ready to execute every mission in pursuit of peace, security, and the stability Somalia deserves,” he said.
During his visit to the area, Brig Gen Ssemwanga also inspected Forward Operating Bases in Quoryoley and Goloweyn, focusing on operational readiness and troop welfare. He was accompanied by Lt Col Justus Magyembe, the Contingent Logistics and Engineering Commander, and other senior officers including heads of Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Women’s Affairs.
The killing of Osman Hussein Bune Amiir marks a significant tactical victory for AUSSOM forces and a setback for Al-Shabaab’s command structure in Lower Shabelle.
