A driver of a coaster bus Registration number UBP 991U has been arrested for dangerous overload including placing extra wooden seats in the corridor of the vehicle.
According to SP Michael Kananura, the vehicle was intercepted Jinja New Nile Bridge Checkpoint following a complaint raised by a concerned passenger onboard on the night of Sunday, 7th September, 2025.
‘We are overloaded, I can barely breathe. I asked them to return my money before we left Mbale but they refused,” wrote a passenger in a message that was delivered to Afande Namanya Rogers.
The Coaster was travelling from Mbale to Kampala late in the night.
Kananura says that upon inspection, it was discovered that extra chairs had been placed in the corridor of the vehicle, where passengers in excess of the allowed capacity were seated, posing a serious risk to road safety.
“This reminds us that road safety is a collective responsibility. We commend the individual who reported the matter & we urge all passengers & members of the public to continue playing an active role in ensuring safety on our roads,” says Kananura.
