KAMPALA, Uganda – March 26, 2026 — Police in Kampala have arrested three suspects accused of impersonating the Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, in a coordinated fraud scheme targeting both police officers and members of the public.
The suspects have been identified as Ariho Abubakar Uthmaan, Bukenya Fayim, and Kaweesi Dalton. Authorities say the trio allegedly used fake identities across multiple social media platforms to pose as the country’s top police official in an attempt to extort money from unsuspecting victims.
According to a statement issued by Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson, SP Rachael Kawala, on Thursday, March 26, 2026, the suspects are currently detained at Jinja Road Central Police Station as investigations continue.
Police confirmed that the arrests were carried out on March 24, 2026, following intelligence reports linking the suspects to the impersonation racket. The group is believed to have executed the scheme over a period of time, exploiting public trust in high-ranking security officials.
A case of personation has since been formally registered. Investigators also conducted searches at the suspects’ residences, where they recovered electronic devices and documents suspected to have been used in carrying out the fraudulent activities.
Authorities have warned the public to remain vigilant against online impersonation scams and urged anyone who may have interacted with the suspects to report to the nearest police station.
The Uganda Police Force continues to intensify efforts to combat cyber-related crimes and protect citizens from digital fraud schemes.
