BREAKING NEWS: Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga Dies of Cardiac Arrest in India at 80
Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has died at the age of 80 after suffering a cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment in India.
According to Indian police and local media, Odinga collapsed Wednesday morning during a routine walk at an Ayurvedic treatment facility in Koothattukulam, located in the Ernakulam district of Kerala State. He had arrived at the facility six days ago, accompanied by his daughter, close family members, and a personal physician.
Staff at the Ayurvedic Eye Hospital reported that Odinga had been following a daily regimen of walks and treatment sessions. After collapsing, he was rushed to a nearby private hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead at approximately 9:52 a.m. local time. His body is currently being held at Deva Matha Hospital.
The hospital spokesperson said the Odinga family had a longstanding relationship with the facility, which had previously treated his daughter for a vision-related condition. Local police confirmed that Odinga’s death has been reported to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office for formal procedures.
Odinga was a towering figure in Kenyan politics, having served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 under a power-sharing deal following the contested 2007 elections. He led the Orange Democratic Movement and remained a key opposition voice for decades, contesting multiple presidential elections.
Further details are expected as authorities in both India and Kenya coordinate arrangements.
