The Uganda Police Force has licensed 12 companies to operate as gun dealers for the 2026 financial year, while also approving 191 private security companies across the country, authorities announced on Monday.
In a public notice dated March 9, 2026, the Inspector General of Police said the licenses were issued in accordance with the Firearms Act, which strictly regulates the sale, repair, and handling of firearms and ammunition in Uganda.
The annual licensing exercise is part of efforts to strengthen firearm control and ensure private security companies operate within the law.
Firearms Dealers Strictly Regulated
Under the Firearms Act (Cap 299), gun dealers in Uganda are allowed to buy, sell, and repair firearms and ammunition only from officially registered premises approved by police licensing authorities.
Licensed dealers must also:
-
Maintain detailed records of all firearm and ammunition transactions
-
Allow inspection of their records and premises by police
-
Ensure secure storage of firearms and ammunition
-
Restrict access to weapons to authorized personnel only
Authorities say these measures are intended to prevent illegal firearm possession and strengthen national security oversight.
