Lukwago Nominated for Third Term as Kampala Lord Mayor, Blasts Police Over Violence
Kampala | Friday, September 6, 2025 — Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, who also serves as the interim president of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), has officially been nominated to seek re-election for a third term.
His nomination was confirmed by Kampala District Returning Officer Rashid Hasakya at the Electoral Commission’s offices in Ntinda. Lukwago arrived at the nomination center flanked by a large and enthusiastic entourage, including his wife Zawedde Lukwago, Deputy Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, and several senior PFF leaders.
However, the journey to the nomination center was marred by chaos. Lukwago condemned what he described as violent police interference, alleging that security forces set up unlawful roadblocks, fired tear gas, and disrupted his convoy. He reported that two boda-boda riders were knocked down in the melee and several members of his team were briefly detained.
“We embarked on our journey peacefully, but en route, we faced brutal police action,” Lukwago told reporters. “I condemn this in the strongest possible terms. All candidates should be allowed to engage with citizens freely and without intimidation.”
In his post-nomination address, Lukwago reiterated his longstanding commitment to defending public land and infrastructure in Kampala. He accused “land grabbers” of disguising exploitation as development, warning that markets, schools, and playgrounds remain under threat.
“I have been and will continue to be a stumbling block to cartels trying to grab public property,” he declared. “My top priority is to safeguard public assets and promote sustainable development in Kampala.”
Lukwago’s entry officially intensifies the race for City Hall, where several contenders have already secured nominations. Among them are Nakawa East MP Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga, representing the National Unity Platform (NUP); Beatrice Mao of the Democratic Party (DP); and independent candidate Nabilah Naggayi Ssempala.
With the campaign period heating up, all eyes now turn to how Kampala’s electorate will respond to a highly competitive and politically charged mayoral race.
