Two Arrested in Foiled Bank Scam Involving Fake Dollars
MBALE CITY – Police in Mbale City are currently detaining two unidentified men who were caught red-handed attempting to defraud an elderly man using counterfeit U.S. dollars at Centenary Bank’s Mbale Branch on Friday, September 19.
According to Annet Nandelenga, the Branch Manager at Centenary Bank, the suspects are believed to be part of a network of con artists who target unsuspecting bank clients—particularly those withdrawing large sums of money.
“These men are known tricksters. Our staff had been monitoring them because they often enter the bank, loiter without transacting, and try to engage clients in conversation,” said Manager Nandelenga.
She revealed that the bank’s staff became suspicious when they noticed the two men surrounding an elderly customer, who they had apparently identified as someone making a significant withdrawal.
“The moment our team saw them engaging the old man, we quickly intervened and apprehended them,” she added.
The suspects were handed over to police and are currently being held at Mbale Central Police Station as investigations continue.
Efforts to get a statement from Elgon Region Police Spokesperson Rogers Taitika were unsuccessful, as he said he had not yet been briefed by either the CID or DPC at the time of reporting.
