Muslim Faithful Gather at Uganda National Mosque for Special Prayers for Saif al-Islam Gaddafi
Muslim faithful in Uganda on Friday gathered at the Uganda National Mosque to offer special prayers for Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
The prayers were held shortly after the weekly Juma (Friday congregational) prayers at the Kampala-based mosque and were led by the Mufti of Uganda, Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje. The mosque, constructed with funding support from the late Libyan leader, was repeatedly referenced during the gathering as worshippers reflected on historical ties between Uganda and Libya.
Qur’an Recitations and Ramadan Message
The special session began with recitations from the Holy Qur’an led by Muhammad Luwemba, Secretary for Da’wah at the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), who previously trained in Islamic theology in Libya.
Delivering the main sermon, UMSC Director of Sharia Ziyad Swaleh Lubanga urged Muslims to prepare spiritually, mentally and economically for the forthcoming holy month of Ramadan, expected to begin in mid-February.
“Believers should intensify their devotion through obligatory prayers, night prayers, charity to the needy, and recitation of the Holy Qur’an, as Allah abundantly rewards the faithful during Ramadan,” Sheikh Lubanga said.
Religious Significance
Friday, February 13, 2026, marked the last Friday of Sha’ban, the Islamic month preceding Ramadan, giving the gathering added spiritual importance.
Among those in attendance were UMSC Secretary General Abbas Muluubya Ssekyanzi and former Electoral Commission Chairperson Badru Kiggundu, alongside Muslim leaders from various regions.
According to UMSC spokesperson Zziwa Ashiraf, the special prayers were organized to honor the memory of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, who was reportedly killed last week.
The gathering concluded with prayers for peace, unity and spiritual renewal as Muslims prepare to enter the holy month of Ramadan.
