MTN Mobile Money Uganda Appoints Sarah Bateta Okwi as Acting Managing Director and CEO
KAMPALA — MTN Mobile Money Uganda has appointed Sarah Bateta Okwi as its Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective 1 March 2026, following the decision by Richard Yego to step down from the role.
Okwi’s appointment comes at a critical moment as MTN Mobile Money continues its transition into a fully independent fintech company, separate from MTN Uganda’s core telecommunications business. She currently serves as Chief Finance Officer and will lead the organization in an acting capacity while the Board initiates the process of recruiting a substantive CEO.
Richard Yego will officially exit the position at the end of February 2026, concluding a four-year tenure marked by significant growth and transformation of the mobile money business. Under his leadership, MTN Mobile Money Uganda expanded its product offerings, advanced digital financial inclusion, strengthened regulatory alignment, and consolidated its position as one of Uganda’s leading digital financial services providers.
The Board of Directors expressed appreciation for Yego’s leadership and his contribution to the growth and success of the company.
Okwi brings nearly 20 years of experience within the MTN Group, having held several senior leadership roles across the organization. As Chief Finance Officer, she has played a key role in strengthening financial governance, enhancing regulatory compliance, and building operational resilience at MTN Mobile Money Uganda.
The Board reassured customers, partners, and stakeholders that the business remains stable and fully operational, with all services continuing as usual during the leadership transition.
