The accident occurred at around 11 p.m. at Nyabago Cell, in Kigorobya town council, along the Hoima–Buliisa road. The victims were travelling aboard a Fuso lorry (registration number UBB 639W), which was carrying over 50 market vendors returning to Hoima city from a market in Buliisa district.
The lorry reportedly failed to ascend a hill, lost control, and overturned, killing nineteen people on the spot and leaving thirteen others critically injured. Patrick Musinguzi, a resident of Kigorobya, said they were alerted to the scene by the victims’ screams for help.
According to Julius Hakiza, spokesperson for the Albertine Region Police, the driver of the lorry fled the scene following the crash. He said the police have commenced investigations to establish the exact cause of the accident.
Police evacuated the injured to Hoima regional referral hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Hoima City Mortuary.
