Luuka District, Uganda – One person has died on the spot and another sustained serious injuries following a fatal road accident involving a sugarcane-loaded truck in Luuka District.
The accident occurred on Friday, February 20, 2026, at Kalyowa Village in Kyanvuma Town Council. According to preliminary reports, a Tata lorry registration number UBF 419, loaded with sugarcane and traveling from Kyanvuma to Busalamu, knocked down a Bajaj motorcycle registration number UMA 981CT that was transporting bread.
Victim Identified
The deceased has been identified as Meddie Nsibirano, 18, a resident of Nabyoto Village in Bukoova Town Council, Luuka District. The injured victim, identified as Lazaro Wandera, was rushed to Kiyunga Health Center IV for medical treatment.
The body of the deceased was taken to Kiyunga Health Center IV mortuary for a postmortem examination as investigations into the crash continue.
Suspected Cause of the Crash
Eyewitnesses attributed the accident to alleged over speeding by the truck driver, who reportedly failed to negotiate a sharp corner before knocking the motorcycle riders.
The Chairperson of Kyanvuma Town Council, Muziru Haruna, confirmed the incident and urged drivers to avoid reckless driving, particularly on sharp bends and busy rural roads.
The Officer in Charge of Kalyowa Police Post, Kayima Jimmy, also confirmed the fatal crash. He cautioned both drivers and motorcyclists against over speeding and called for strict adherence to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.
Rising Road Safety Concerns in Luuka
Road accidents involving heavy trucks and motorcycles remain a growing concern in Luuka District and across eastern Uganda, with authorities repeatedly appealing for increased road safety awareness.
Investigations into the fatal accident are ongoing.
