TOP STORY: NRM Orders Fresh Youth Elections in Sironko After Chaotic Poll

Sironko District, Uganda – Monday, August 11, 2025

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party in Sironko District is holding fresh elections today for the position of District Youth Chairperson, following a chaotic and controversial poll held last Friday, August 8.

The decision to conduct a re-election was prompted by violent scenes that marred the earlier vote. Tensions flared when Cyrus Wangenga Mafabi, one of the contenders, accused the district electoral commission of blocking his supporters from accessing the polling venue.

Despite the unrest, the initial poll continued, and James Kadoli was declared winner unopposed. However, in the aftermath, Sironko District NRM Administrator Wilson Wambaka declared the election null and void, citing violence and the absence of officially mandated party officers to oversee the process.

“No party officer was present to witness the election, and due to the violent nature of the incident, it cannot stand,” Wambaka stated.

Other positions were filled during the disputed August 8 vote, including:

  • Mary Nabukwasi – Vice Chairperson
  • Ben Nabutiri – General Secretary
  • John Naketi – Publicity Secretary
  • Doreen Namono – Secretary for Female Affairs

However, it’s unclear whether these results will also be reviewed.

According to Milton Mafabi, Sironko’s District NRM Registrar, the previous election was invalidated largely because the designated registrar was absent.

“Today’s election is being held at the district party office under proper supervision. All candidates are ready and the process will follow NRM electoral guidelines,” Mafabi confirmed.

The re-election is expected to draw significant attention from youth delegates and party officials alike, as the NRM continues efforts to restore order and credibility in its internal electoral processes.
