UPDF Passes Out 168 Marine Troops After Completing Intensive Training
The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Marine Brigade celebrated the graduation of 168 new troops following their completion of a rigorous four-month Marine Basic Induction Course at the Marine Training School in Kalangalo, Wakiso District.
The passing-out ceremony, held on Monday, 3rd November 2025, was presided over by Brigadier General Michael Nyarwa, the Commander of the Marine Brigade. Brig. Gen. Nyarwa lauded the graduates for their discipline, resilience, and teamwork throughout the training, noting that their transformation from trainees to professional mariners was a testament to their determination.
“You arrived as trainees, but today, you leave as mariners—disciplined, skilled, and ready to serve,” Brig. Gen. Nyarwa told the graduates. “You have overcome the rigours of swimming, combat water survival, navigation, and tactical training. Your success is a reflection of your commitment and teamwork.”
The course, which began on June 30, 2025, aimed to equip the trainees with essential maritime skills, including navigation, communication, small boat handling, intelligence, first aid, physical fitness, and maritime law.
While acknowledging their technical proficiency, Brig. Gen. Nyarwa emphasized the importance of integrity and strong character, urging the graduates to uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct. “Skill without character is a hollow vessel,” he cautioned. “Respect your uniform, your comrades, and the communities you serve.”
Col. David Kararira, Commandant of the Marine Training School, congratulated the graduates on their achievement and commended the instructors for maintaining high standards despite several challenges. “Completing this course is just the beginning,” Col. Kararira remarked. “Your future is shaped by your discipline, focus, and ambition.”
He also highlighted the growing importance of the Marine Training School, recognizing the continuous support from the Marine Brigade Command in strengthening the school’s capacity to produce a highly skilled and capable maritime force.
The ceremony was attended by senior and junior UPDF officers, local community leaders, and the graduates’ families and friends, all of whom celebrated the accomplishments of the new marine corps members.
