MOGADISHU, Somalia – February 18, 2026 — Peacekeepers from the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) have been honoured for their outstanding role in securing United Nations premises in Somalia amid ongoing security threats.
The recognition ceremony, held at a secured base in Mogadishu, celebrated the dedication and professionalism of Ugandan troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
Securing UN Facilities in High-Risk Areas
According to military officials, the UPDF contingent played a critical role in safeguarding key UN installations, ensuring uninterrupted humanitarian and diplomatic operations in Somalia’s volatile capital.
The troops were commended for maintaining perimeter security, conducting patrols, and responding swiftly to potential threats targeting international facilities.
Somalia continues to face security challenges from armed insurgent groups, making protection of strategic installations a top priority for international peacekeeping forces.
Recognition of Professionalism and Sacrifice
During the ceremony, senior mission commanders praised the UPDF peacekeepers for their discipline, courage, and commitment to regional stability.
Officials noted that the Ugandan troops demonstrated exceptional coordination with Somali security forces and other African Union partners to neutralize threats and deter attacks on UN compounds.
The awarded soldiers received medals and certificates in recognition of their service.
Uganda’s Continued Role in Somalia
Uganda remains one of the largest troop-contributing countries to peace support operations in Somalia. Over the years, UPDF forces have played a central role in stabilizing key towns and protecting critical infrastructure.
Military leadership reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to supporting peace and reconstruction efforts in Somalia under the African Union framework.
Strengthening Regional Security
The honouring of UPDF peacekeepers underscores the broader regional effort to promote peace, security, and humanitarian access in Somalia.
Security analysts say continued collaboration between African Union forces and Somali authorities is crucial to sustaining recent gains against insurgent activity.
