TOP STORY: UPDF Redeploys Troops Along Yumbe–South Sudan Border After Deadly Rebel Clashes
Yumbe District, Uganda – August 11, 2025
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has redeployed troops to key positions along the Yumbe–South Sudan border following a series of deadly attacks by suspected South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) rebels that have left Ugandan soldiers dead and civilians displaced.

In the most recent attack, over 15 homes were burned down in Komorofe village, Kochi sub-county, Yumbe District, and property worth millions was destroyed. Residents were forced to flee after the rebels reportedly crossed over a kilometre into Uganda, planted a flag, harvested crops, and set up a makeshift base in Fitina Mbaya village.
“These attackers exploited porous border points to launch their raids,” said Lt. Nasser Mene, UPDF Public Information Officer for West Nile. “We’ve now increased day and night patrols to seal off vulnerable areas and prevent further incursions.”
Gunfire, Casualties, and Tensions Escalate
The UPDF responded swiftly, pursuing the insurgents in a confrontation that resulted in the death of one Ugandan soldier and three SSPDF rebels. On July 28, another attempt by UPDF forces to establish dialogue with the rebels ended violently when the soldiers were met with gunfire, killing one and injuring two others.
“After the ambush, UPDF retaliated, killing three rebels and capturing some of their equipment,” Lt. Mene confirmed.

Civilians Flee, Emergency Aid Rushed In
Dozens of families have sought refuge in Yumbe Town, with the government and humanitarian agencies rushing in emergency relief to the affected.
The border region remains a hotspot due to long stretches of unmarked territory between Koboko, Yumbe, and Moyo, often sparking territorial disputes. These latest events echo a similar 2020 incident where four South Sudanese soldiers were killed after raiding Goboro village and stealing livestock.
Context: A Fragile Border Zone
Security experts warn that unless the Uganda–South Sudan border is clearly demarcated, tensions and cross-border violence are likely to continue.
“The lack of a defined boundary is a security time bomb,” one official said. “Both governments must act urgently to resolve the issue.”
