5-Year-Old Girl Dies in Tragic Drowning Incident in Wakiso

WAKISO – A five-year-old girl, Nakawuki Regina Gift, has died in a suspected drowning incident following heavy rains in Ttula Zone, Nabweru Division, Wakiso District, on July 28, 2025.

According to SSP Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Nakawuki was playing on the verandah of her home when a heavy downpour began. Her mother, Bwambale Justine, had reportedly stepped out to collect rainwater, leaving the child and her siblings indoors.

Tragically, Nakawuki slipped on the wet surface and fell into a nearby water trench. Despite her mother’s attempt to save her, the fast-moving water swept the child away into a larger drainage channel.

Police, along with local residents, launched a search for the child on Monday, but were unable to locate her. The search resumed the following day, July 29, when her body was discovered downstream. It was later taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

SSP Onyango urged parents to maintain close supervision of children, particularly during the rainy season. He cautioned against allowing children to play near water channels, emphasizing that such environments pose significant danger during periods of heavy rain.
