The District Registration Officer of the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) in Kyankwanzi District has been arrested for allegedly extorting newly recruited Assistants.

Mr. Nabuguuzi Isaac was arraigned before the Magistrate’s Court, Kyankwanzi on charges of demanding money by menaces on Thursday, 24th July, 2025 and remanded until August 17, 2025.

According to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit that carried out the arrest, Nabuguuzi between June and July 2025, exploited his position to extort money from the newly recruited Registration Assistants.

He used threats of job termination to coerce them into sending money after they received their first salary in June.

Allegedly over 50 Registration Assistants each gave him amounts ranging from UGX 300,000 to UGX 500,000, both in cash and through mobile money.

Mr. Nabuuguzi reportedly claimed the money was a “token of appreciation” for his role in helping them secure their jobs.
