Expelled Kyambogo Guild President Declares Bid for Toroma County MP Seat on NUP Ticket
KATAKWI – Benjamin Akiso, the former Kyambogo University Guild President who was expelled earlier this month, has officially declared his intention to run for the Toroma County Member of Parliament seat in the upcoming elections.
Akiso made the announcement on Saturday, July 26, 2025, unveiling a campaign poster confirming he will contest under the National Unity Platform (NUP) party. His declaration comes just weeks after his dismissal from the university following his role in leading a violent protest.
Kyambogo University, in a letter dated July 3, 2025, terminated Akiso’s student status after a recommendation from the Students’ Affairs and Welfare Committee. The University Council approved the decision during its 111th meeting held on June 27, citing his leadership in a demonstration opposing the institution’s policy of imposing additional charges for late registration.
Despite the controversy, Akiso is pressing forward with a bold grassroots campaign.
“I may not have money, or a car, or enough posters,” Akiso stated during the announcement. “But I’ll tirelessly seek out my votes and support for the president—month after month, day and night, through rain and sunshine. Toroma, Katakwi will be the Luwero of 1981–1986. Your support is highly welcomed.”
Akiso’s entry into the political race is already drawing attention, with observers keen to see how his recent activism and alignment with NUP will influence his campaign in the eastern Uganda constituency.
