August 4, 2025 | National News | By BBC MEDIA

Rhoda Kalema, one of Uganda’s most influential and pioneering female politicians, has died at the age of 96, her family confirmed Monday. Kalema, often referred to as the “Mother of Ugandan Politics,” passed away peacefully at her home in Kampala, surrounded by loved ones.

A Life of Firsts

Kalema was one of the first women to serve in Uganda’s Parliament, and a key figure in the country’s turbulent political history. Known for her courage, integrity, and unwavering advocacy for democracy, she helped shape Uganda’s post-independence governance and laid the groundwork for women’s political participation in East Africa.

Born in 1929, Kalema was the daughter of Erinayo Wilson Oryema, Uganda’s first African Inspector General of Police. She began her political career in the 1970s, a time of political instability and repression.

“Rhoda Kalema paved the way for generations of women leaders. Her resilience in the face of dictatorship inspired a nation,” said former opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye.

️ Political Legacy

Kalema served in various government and opposition roles:

  • Appointed to the National Consultative Council (1979–1980) after the fall of Idi Amin.

  • Served as a Member of Parliament for Kiboga District.

  • Played a major role in the Constituent Assembly that drafted Uganda’s 1995 Constitution.

Despite arrests and threats under multiple regimes, Kalema never wavered in her principles.

“She was fearless, but soft-spoken — the kind of leader who didn’t shout, but was always heard,” said MP Rebecca Kadaga, Uganda’s former Speaker of Parliament.

️ National Mourning

Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum:

  • President Yoweri Museveni described her as “a heroine of Uganda’s democratic journey.”

  • Opposition leaders called for a national day of remembrance in her honor.

  • Women’s rights groups hailed her as a symbol of progress and defiance against patriarchy.

The Parliament of Uganda is expected to hold a special session in her honor later this week.
