Information reaching our desk is that the unfortunate incident occurred at Alito/Moroto Bridge at the border of Otuke and Kapelebyong districts.

By Friday, 22nd August, 2025, three bodies had been recovered and they have been successfully identified as Alupo Kevin, 26 old hair dresser and resident of Akadot Village, Akadot parish, Pallisa Town Council, Pallisa District.

It is said that Alupo was going to her marital home in Ajeleyik Village, Acukudu parish, Napak District. Her husband is called Olinga Stephen also an Etesot. Alupo’s details were given by her elder brother, called Opolot Emmanuel aged 28yrs old an etesot from Pallisa District.

The second body was identified as Odongo Kennedy, 25 yr old Langi and a student at Kotido Technical School. Odongo was a resident of Adungu Village, Ayamo Parish, Barr Sub County in Lira District.

Odongo is a son to a police officer called Okello James attached to Katakwi ASTU. Odongo was on his way back from school going to Lira. Part of his particulars was got from his school mate, Apio Kella and from his relative.

The third body is identified as Korinyang Isaiah, 27 year old Karamojong and resident of Morual Okieny Village, Lomusian Parish, Loronga Sub County, Dodoth East County, Kaabong District.

He boarded from Kotido but his destiny is yet unknown since his relatives haven’t been found yet. His particulars were extracted from his National ID which was recovered.

According to North Kyoga Police, on Wednesday 20/08/2025, passengers were moving along the road of Kotido to Soroti Via Abim, Otuke and Kapelebyong districts.

As they reached Moroto BRIDGE, they found buses packed on both sides which could not cross both directions.

Passengers were to cross then board from opposite sides. It so happened that the volume of water was too much and people who have not been identified yet were making money in the process of helping people to cross.

The money makers tied a rope across the water and from the side of Otuke, the rope was tied on a small stick being pulled by people. From the side of Kapelebyong, the rope was connected on some car which is said to have been parked by.

Passengers then coming from both directions were then set to cross using the rope at the same time and whoever could meet a friend on the way was to find how to bypass a friend.

Unfortunately, the passengers’ weight overwhelmed the rope and it got cut and all passengers who were holding onto the rope fell into the water.

Based on the information on ground, it’s said that the time the rope got cut, 15 passengers were holding on it crossing.

Three were rescued immediately and taken for treatment. By Friday, 22/08/2025, three dead bodies had been recovered and identified.

“On assumption, we believe more nine bodies are still missing,” says a police source.

The recovered bodies of Alupo and Odongo were taken by their relatives to the respective districts for burial and the one of Korinyang is still with police since the relatives are not yet known. Efforts are being made to take him to the mortuary as police awaits his relatives.

This road causing loss of lives is a central road connecting three policing regions ie East Kyoga, North Kyoga and North Karamoja.
