Police Arrest 16 Over Dangerous Vehicle Loading En Route to Football Match
Nsangi, Mpigi District — Police on Sunday, August 24, 2025, arrested 16 individuals, including a driver and five passengers, who were traveling in a dangerously overloaded Toyota Hiace, registration number UBH 183S, heading to a football match in Buwama.
The vehicle was intercepted after traffic surveillance cameras flagged it for carrying 31 passengers — 13 dangerously riding on the roof and 18 crammed inside. Authorities also discovered that the number plates had been deliberately concealed.
According to Traffic Police spokesperson SP Michael Kananura, the driver faces multiple charges including driving out of class, concealing a number plate, and breaching the operator’s license. Meanwhile, the passengers are charged with riding in a dangerous position.
Shortly after the arrests, a group of individuals stormed the police station demanding the immediate release of the suspects. This led to a swift police response and the arrest of three more individuals on charges of obstruction and inciting violence.
“We strongly condemn this kind of reckless and unlawful behavior. Such actions not only violate traffic regulations but also endanger lives,” SP Kananura said.
He urged the public to respect road safety laws and avoid behavior that puts lives at risk.
