Seven Family Members Killed in Masaka–Mbarara Highway Accident in Lwengo District
LWENGO, Uganda — At least seven members of one family died in a fatal road traffic accident in the early hours of Saturday, December 27, 2025, along the Masaka–Mbarara Highway in Lwengo District, according to Traffic Police.
The crash occurred at about 4:30 a.m. at Njagalakasayi, involving a Fuso Fighter truck (registration UBP 510V) and a Toyota Fielder (registration UBH 476W).
Traffic Police Spokesperson SP Michael Kananura said preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the Toyota Fielder, who was travelling from the Masaka side, attempted to overtake a line of vehicles and collided head-on with the oncoming truck.
“All seven occupants of the Toyota Fielder died on the spot,” Kananura confirmed.
Police identified the victims as a husband and wife, their four children, and the man’s brother, all of whom were travelling in the same vehicle. Some of the deceased have been identified by first responders as Ivan Burahi and Ainembazi Brenda, the married couple.
Authorities said investigations into the crash are ongoing as police work to reconstruct the circumstances that led to the collision.
Following the incident, police renewed calls for motorists to exercise caution, particularly during night travel.
“We urge all drivers to avoid reckless overtaking, especially at night when visibility is poor,” Kananura said, advising motorists to limit night travel where possible and ensure they are well-rested to reduce fatigue-related crashes.
The Lwengo accident adds to a growing number of fatal road crashes reported during the festive season, a period often marked by increased traffic, speeding, and risky driving behavior on major highways.
