BREAKING NEWS: NUP MP-Elect Faces Court Charges Over Curtain Theft

Kalungu East MP-Elect Yusuf Kiruuta Nkeretanyi Arraigned at Buganda Road Court Over Shs 3.7 Billion Theft

KAMPALA, Uganda — Kalungu East Member of Parliament–elect, Yusuf Kiruuta Nkeretanyi, has been arraigned before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kampala on charges of theft involving property valued at approximately Shs 3.7 billion.

State prosecutors allege that Nkeretanyi stole curtains, cushions, and curtain holders belonging to prominent Kampala businessman Hajj Sulaiman Lwabuuka Kasule. The alleged theft is said to have occurred between 2018 and January 2022 at Eagle Plaza, a commercial building located in Kampala Central Division.

Nkeretanyi appeared in court on Friday, February 6, 2026, together with six co-accused persons, before Chief Magistrate Ritah Kidasa Neumbe. During the court proceedings, the prosecution presented the items alleged to have been stolen as part of the evidence before court.

The Buganda Road Court granted bail to all accused persons, allowing them temporary freedom as investigations and trial proceedings continue. Bail conditions were not immediately communicated.

The case has attracted national attention, coming shortly after Nkeretanyi’s election to the 11th Parliament of Uganda as Kalungu East MP. Legal observers say the matter will proceed through the trial process, during which the court will assess evidence and hear submissions from both the prosecution and defence teams.

The court is expected to set further hearing dates as the case moves forward. Nkeretanyi and his co-accused remain presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law in Uganda.
