NATIONAL | UGANDA – Mzee Nathan Okori Adiyo, the father of former Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah, has passed away at the age of 97, coincidentally on the same date his son died four years ago.
Family sources confirmed that Mzee Okori died on March 20, 2026, at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor in Gulu City, where he had been receiving treatment following respiratory complications.
His passing comes exactly four years after the death of his son, Jacob Oulanyah, who died on March 20, 2022, at the age of 56 in Seattle, Washington, United States, where he had been undergoing specialized medical care. His death was officially announced by President Yoweri Museveni.
The news of Mzee Okori’s death was made public by Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Norbert Mao through his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
“This is uncanny! On the fourth anniversary of the death of Speaker Jacob Oulanyah, we have lost his father Mzee Nathan Okori. I have just got the sad news from his family that two days ago he was rushed to Lacor with respiratory complications and today he died. Sad!” Mao posted.
Speaker of Parliament Anita Among also expressed her condolences, mourning the passing of a patriarch who raised a leader still remembered across the country.
“It is with a heavy heart that I inform our esteemed colleagues, the Parliament fraternity, and all who loved our brother, the late Rt Hon Jacob Oulanyah, that his father, Mzee Nathan Okori Adiyo, has passed away at the age of 97 at St Mary’s Hospital, Lacor. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and all his loved ones. We will share the funeral arrangements after consulting with the family,” she said.
Leaders and citizens across Uganda continue to pay tribute to both Mzee Okori and his late son, remembering their contributions and legacy.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
