Kadongo Kamu Legends Speak Out Against Eddy Kenzo’s Comments, Demand Respect for Genre

Veteran Kadongo Kamu musicians in Uganda have publicly criticized remarks made by Eddy Kenzo, accusing the award-winning singer of undermining their long-standing contributions to the country’s music industry.

The dispute, which has sparked debate among fans and industry stakeholders, began after Kenzo allegedly made comments perceived as dismissive of Kadongo Kamu—a traditional Ugandan music genre known for its storytelling and cultural significance.

Several Kadongo Kamu legends have since responded, expressing disappointment and calling for greater recognition of their role in shaping Uganda’s music landscape. The artists emphasized that their music laid the foundation for many modern genres and continues to resonate with audiences across generations.

“We have worked hard to build this industry from the ground up,” one veteran artist said. “Kadongo Kamu is not just music—it is a cultural identity that deserves respect.”

The musicians further argued that comparing contemporary Afrobeat-influenced music to traditional genres without acknowledging historical context risks erasing the contributions of earlier artists.

Eddy Kenzo, one of Uganda’s most internationally recognized performers, has yet to issue a detailed response to the backlash. However, the controversy has reignited conversations about generational divides within the music industry and the need for unity among artists.

Industry observers note that such disagreements are not new, as evolving musical styles often lead to tensions between traditional and modern performers. Nevertheless, many are calling for dialogue and mutual respect to bridge the gap.

As the debate continues, fans have taken to social media to share mixed reactions, with some defending Kenzo’s perspective while others side with Kadongo Kamu artists, urging recognition of their enduring legacy.

The ongoing discussion highlights broader questions about cultural preservation, artistic evolution, and respect within Uganda’s vibrant music scene.
