High Court to Rule on Erias Lukwago’s Bail Application on July 30

KAMPALA — The High Court is set to deliver its ruling on the bail application of lawyer and politician Erias Lukwago on July 30, 2026, after his defence team asked for his temporary release, citing concerns over his health.

The bail hearing was conducted from the chambers of Justice David Matovu, with Lukwago’s wife, Zawedde, his lawyers and proposed sureties allowed to attend the proceedings.

Lukwago’s defence presented four sureties and also relied on his personal undertaking to appear before court whenever required.

Speaking after the hearing, defence lawyer Medard Lubega Sseggona said the defence had fulfilled all the requirements for the bail application.

“We introduced four sureties that came to stand for him, in addition to his personal guarantee of attending court as and when it is required,” Sseggona said.

The defence and prosecution agreed on a schedule for filing written submissions before the judge delivers his decision electronically on July 30.

Defence Raises Concerns Over Lukwago’s Health

During the proceedings, Lukwago’s lawyers also raised concerns about his health while in custody and asked the court to allow him to access treatment at Mulago National Referral Hospital.

However, the court did not issue an order directing his transfer to the hospital. Instead, prison authorities were directed to consult medical personnel and ensure that Lukwago receives the necessary medical care while in custody.

Sseggona said the defence had specifically applied for Lukwago to be taken to Mulago for treatment, but the matter was left to prison authorities after consultation with medical professionals.

The lawyer also expressed concern over the limited capacity of prison medical facilities to provide specialised treatment, citing shortages of medical personnel and equipment.

According to Sseggona, while physiotherapy could help manage some of Lukwago’s pain, it would not address his broader medical needs.

Lukwago Faces Misprision of Treason Charges

The bail application follows Lukwago’s committal to the High Court to face trial on charges related to misprision of treason.

His defence has previously cited his medical condition as one of the grounds for seeking temporary release from custody.

The High Court will now consider the written submissions from both sides before delivering its ruling on the bail application on July 30, 2026.
