Police Shoot Dead Armed Robbery Suspect During Foiled Heist in Kampala
KAMPALA, Uganda – Police have shot dead an armed robbery suspect during a failed robbery operation in Ssemwogerere Zone, Nakawa Division, in the early hours of Tuesday, June 23, 2026.
The incident occurred at around 5:00 a.m. when a businessman and his wife were reportedly attacked by three armed men while walking along Mukasa Road in Kampala.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachael Kawala, the suspects intercepted the couple and ordered them to stop and lie on the ground.
Robbers Target Businessman and Wife
Police said the victims complied with the robbers’ demands as the suspects proceeded to steal the businessman’s mobile phone and wallet at gunpoint.
The attackers then turned their attention to the woman and allegedly demanded her mobile phone.
However, before the robbery could be completed, police officers on routine motorcycle patrol in the area arrived at the scene.
Suspects Flee as Police Respond
Upon noticing the approaching officers, the suspects abandoned a bag containing suspected stolen property and fled.
The abandoned items reportedly included a firearm believed to have been used during the robbery.
Police immediately launched a pursuit of the fleeing suspects, leading to a confrontation during which one of the suspects was fatally shot.
“The officers responded swiftly after encountering the robbery in progress. During the pursuit, one male suspect was put out of action,” SP Kawala said.
The deceased suspect has not yet been identified but is believed to be approximately 25 years old.
Firearm and Suspected Stolen Property Recovered
Police recovered several items from the scene, including weapons and property believed to have been stolen from previous victims.
The recovered exhibits include:
- One SAR rifle
- One bayonet
- Four smartphones suspected to be stolen
- Two black shaving machines
- Three black jackets
- One empty cartridge
- One screwdriver
- A pair of red canvas shoes
- One black laptop bag
Authorities say the exhibits will form part of ongoing investigations aimed at identifying the deceased suspect and tracing his accomplices, who remain at large.
Investigations Ongoing
The body of the suspect was transported to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Police have launched a manhunt for the two remaining suspects and urged members of the public with information that could assist investigations to come forward.
