YATE, England — A 66-year-old woman who struggled for decades with severe hearing loss says a specially trained assistance dog has transformed her life, restoring her confidence, independence, and sense of security.
Linda Smith, from Yate near Bristol, has lived with progressively worsening hearing loss since her 20s. Over the years, her condition became so severe that she is now profoundly deaf. Alongside her hearing impairment, she also experiences balance problems that can cause her to fall unexpectedly.
The combination of these challenges left everyday activities increasingly stressful and isolating.
However, everything changed when the charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People matched her with Toffee, a specially trained yellow Labrador that alerts her to important sounds around her, including smoke alarms, doorbells, and other emergency warnings.
Living in Constant Fear
Before meeting Toffee, Smith relied on hearing aids around the clock—even while sleeping—to avoid missing potentially life-threatening sounds.
“I couldn’t hear everyday sounds, so I wore my hearing aids 24 hours a day, even in bed,” she said.
Sleeping with hearing aids proved uncomfortable and often disrupted her rest.
“My sleep was very broken because the hearing aids dug into my neck,” she explained.
Daily tasks also became emotionally draining. Shopping trips and simple walks often left her feeling anxious because she struggled to hear people speaking to her.
During one supermarket visit, Smith said another customer physically moved her after she failed to hear repeated requests to step aside.
A Turning Point
One frightening incident convinced Smith she needed extra support.
After getting ready to attend a close friend’s wedding, she put her hearing aids back in and suddenly realized her home’s boiler had burst.
“I only heard the water running after putting my hearing aids back in,” she recalled.
Concerned about her safety and independence, Smith applied for assistance in 2025 and was later partnered with Toffee.
Sleeping Without Fear
Smith says the impact of having Toffee was immediate.
“The first night I had him, I took my hearing aids out before going to bed and slept without fear, knowing he would alert me if there was any danger,” she said.
The assistance dog has since become an essential part of her daily life, helping her detect important sounds she would otherwise miss.
Beyond alerting her to potential dangers, Toffee has also restored her confidence and improved her emotional well-being.
“He has made me happier than I’ve been in a long time,” Smith said.
“I sometimes wonder how I ever lived without him.”
More Than Practical Support
According to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, assistance dogs do far more than respond to sounds. They also provide companionship, emotional support, and help reduce the isolation many deaf people experience.
Penny Porter, Communications Executive at the charity, said the organization is delighted to see the positive impact Toffee has had on Smith’s life.
“We’re incredibly proud to have supported Linda and to see her confidence and independence grow with Toffee by her side,” Porter said.
She added that hearing dogs offer practical assistance while also giving their owners a renewed sense of connection with the world around them.
Today, Smith says Toffee has not only helped keep her safe but has also given her the confidence to enjoy life again after years of uncertainty.
