Police Arrest Security Guard Over Death of Afrigo Band Founder Moses Matovu
KAMPALA — Police have arrested a private security guard and detained a woman as investigations intensify into the death of Afrigo Band founder Moses Matovu, who died following a confrontation in Kibuli on Thursday.
The suspect, identified as Vincent Nsamba, an employee of security firm SG, was arrested in Nansana hours after Matovu, 77, was pronounced dead at Kibuli Hospital.
Police are also questioning Rose Tumusiime, a woman from Ntungamo District who was reportedly with Matovu shortly before the confrontation.
Matovu was taken to Kibuli Hospital after the incident but was pronounced dead by medical staff.
Police Investigate Kibuli Confrontation
Preliminary reports indicate that Matovu was involved in a confrontation in Kibuli before his death.
An eyewitness told NTV that Matovu had been escorting Tumusiime to her rented home when a man believed to be her boyfriend confronted him and allegedly punched him.
Police have not yet independently confirmed the eyewitness account, and investigations are continuing to establish exactly what happened.
Earlier reports had suggested that Matovu was attacked by suspected thugs.
Police have since opened an investigation and are questioning the people believed to have information about the incident.
Afrigo Band Founder Dies at 77
Matovu founded Afrigo Band in 1975 and went on to lead the legendary Ugandan band for five decades.
He became one of the country’s best-known musicians and played a major role in the development and preservation of Uganda’s live-band music tradition.
News of his death has triggered an outpouring of grief from musicians, fans and cultural figures across the country.
Matovu to Be Buried in Kyanja
Matovu is scheduled to be buried in Kyanja on Friday, September 25, 2026.
As police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, the music fraternity is preparing to bid farewell to one of Uganda’s most enduring musical figures.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police have not yet announced any charges against the arrested suspects.
