15-Year-Old Girl Allegedly Rescued After Being Locked in Toilet for Months in Rivers State

A 15-year-old girl identified as Amarachi has reportedly been rescued after allegedly being locked inside a toilet for months at the home where she worked as a domestic helper in Abuloma, Rivers State, Nigeria.

The teenager, who is reportedly from Ebonyi State, was allegedly living with a couple, identified in reports as Eze Simeon and his wife, when she was reportedly confined inside the toilet as punishment after being accused of committing an offence.

Neighbours reportedly heard girl’s cries

According to accounts circulating online, Amarachi allegedly spent months confined in the toilet under harsh conditions.

She was reportedly given food only once a day, with allegations that she was fed leftover food during the period of her confinement.

The teenager is said to have raised an alarm on Monday, September 15, when the couple allegedly left the house.

Neighbours reportedly heard her cries for help and alerted the police.

Officers from the Abuloma Police Division are said to have responded to the report and rescued the girl from the residence.

Alleged abuse sparks outrage

The reported rescue has triggered widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing shock and anger over the alleged treatment of the teenager.

Several social media users called for a thorough investigation and urged authorities to ensure that anyone found responsible faces the law.

Others criticised the circumstances surrounding the alleged abuse, particularly the claim that the girl was confined for an extended period while working as a domestic helper.

Child protection advocates have repeatedly warned about the vulnerability of minors employed as domestic workers, particularly where they may be isolated from family members and other sources of support.

Investigation expected

Details surrounding the alleged offence that led to Amarachi’s confinement were not immediately clear.

It was also not immediately established whether the couple had been arrested or charged in connection with the allegations.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances of the teenager’s confinement and establish who was responsible for her alleged mistreatment.

The girl’s current medical condition and whether she has been reunited with her family were also not immediately available at the time of publication.

The case has renewed concerns about child abuse, domestic worker exploitation and the protection of vulnerable minors in Nigeria.
