Top Story: Gas Explosion at Banda Hostel Leaves Six Injured
KAMPALA — Panic gripped Banda on Tuesday night after a gas explosion rocked a student hostel in the area, leaving six people injured and causing significant property damage.
The incident occurred at a privately-owned hostel near Kyambogo University. According to eyewitnesses, a loud blast was heard around 9:30 PM, followed by flames and thick smoke billowing from one of the rooms. The explosion is believed to have been caused by a leaking gas cylinder.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, evacuating residents and transporting the injured to nearby medical facilities. Authorities confirmed that six individuals sustained injuries, with at least two reported in critical condition.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police Fire and Rescue team quickly contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjacent rooms. However, the blast caused considerable damage to windows, doors, and personal belongings within the affected section of the hostel.
Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the explosion, with preliminary reports pointing to poor handling and storage of gas cylinders.
Local leaders have called for stricter safety enforcement in student accommodations, as concerns grow over the increasing use of gas for cooking in congested hostels.
More updates to follow as the investigation continues.
