Top Story: Woman Who Married Her Dog Says He’s ‘Perfect’ Despite Critics Calling Her Mad
Northern Ireland — In a love story that defies convention, 43-year-old Wilhelmina Morgan Callaghan says her husband of eight years is loyal, supportive, and truly “perfect” — and yes, he’s also a dog.
Callaghan, from Downpatrick in Northern Ireland, married her Yorkshire terrier, Henry, in a spiritual ceremony in 2009. Despite legal limitations in the UK that prevent official pet marriages, she remains fully committed to her canine companion and even has a certificate to commemorate the union.
“People may think I’m barking mad, but Henry is perfect for me,” she said. “Unlike other marriages which fall apart, I know I’m with Henry for life.”
Henry, a Cork-born pup she adopted from a friend, has remained by Callaghan’s side through thick and thin — including job loss, financial hardship, and even a house flood. Once working in a morgue, she now supports herself as a freelance embalmer.
“Things have fallen apart somewhat since we married in 2009,” she admitted. “But Henry has been great throughout – he is so loyal.”
Affectionately nicknamed “Ri,” meaning “King” in ancient Gaelic, Henry enjoys the royal treatment in Callaghan’s home, where he shares space with ten other dogs. A devoted animal lover, she also runs a Facebook page dedicated to Sealyham Terriers.
Callaghan was inspired to marry Henry after reading stories online about others who had wed their pets. While unusual, she believes strongly in the bond they share — and she’s not alone. Similar pet marriages have been reported globally, including a Dutch woman who married her dog after the death of her feline husband.
“Dogs are better than men,” Callaghan says with conviction. And while society may not always understand her lifestyle, she remains unfazed.
“For me, it’s real. He’s my king, my companion, and the best friend I could ask for.”
