NUP’s Irene Nampala Rejects Kalangala By-Election Results, Alleges Vote Theft

KAMPALA, Uganda — National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Irene Nampala has rejected the official results of the Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament by-election, claiming the outcome did not reflect the will of the voters.

Speaking at the NUP headquarters after the by-election, Nampala thanked the people of Kalangala and her campaign team for their support throughout the race, saying she was encouraged by the backing she received across the district’s islands.

Nampala Thanks Voters and Campaign Team

The opposition candidate expressed appreciation to supporters who participated in her campaign and those who voted for her during the by-election.

“I thank all of you who were involved in the campaign. I thank the people of Kalangala. Thank you for voting for me. I know you voted for me in large numbers, and I know I won the election,” Nampala said.

She praised campaign volunteers who travelled across the island district to mobilize voters despite logistical challenges.

Alleges Vote Theft

Nampala maintained that she was the rightful winner of the election, alleging that the officially declared results did not reflect the votes cast.

“We did not lose. They robbed our votes. But even if they rob us, we shall continue fighting. One day, we will reach where we are going,” she told supporters.

At the time of her remarks, Nampala did not present evidence publicly to support her allegations of vote theft or electoral malpractice.

Calls for Peaceful Political Engagement

Despite rejecting the election outcome, Nampala urged her supporters to remain peaceful and continue participating in the country’s democratic processes.

She encouraged party members not to lose hope and to remain committed to their political objectives.

“Keep fighting, people. We know what we want,” she said.

Kalangala By-Election Draws Political Attention

The Kalangala District Woman MP by-election attracted candidates from several major political parties, making it one of the closely watched electoral contests in Uganda.

The Electoral Commission declared another candidate the winner of the seat following the conclusion of voting.

However, Nampala has maintained that the results announced by the electoral body do not reflect the choice made by voters in Kalangala.

Her comments are likely to fuel further political debate over the by-election, although no formal election petition challenging the official results had been announced by the time of publication.

The Electoral Commission had not responded publicly to Nampala’s allegations, and the officially declared results remain in effect.
