BREAKING: Bobi Wine Promises Museveni Protection If He Peacefully Hands Over Power

MITYANA, UGANDA – National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has pledged that President Yoweri Museveni will be protected if he peacefully relinquishes power after the 2026 general election.

Addressing thousands of supporters at a campaign rally in Busubizi playground, Mityana District, on Monday evening, Kyagulanyi said the suffering of Ugandans would only end if Museveni and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) are voted out.

“If he [Museveni] peacefully hands over power, we shall protect him,” Kyagulanyi told the cheering crowd. “But as long as he remains in power, Ugandans will continue to suffer.”

Calls for Mass Turnout in 2026

Kyagulanyi urged citizens to prepare for a large voter turnout in the January 2026 election, calling for the peaceful removal of what he described as a regime that has failed in service delivery, especially in Buganda.

He criticised the government for poor road infrastructure and declining public services but avoided framing the issue along tribal lines.

“I will not dwell on tribal issues,” he said. “But even a blind person can see the poor, impassable roads.”

Key Campaign Promises

During the rally, Kyagulanyi made several promises under a potential NUP government, including:

  • Prioritising teachers’ salaries

  • Better pay for security forces to curb civilian brutality

  • Creation of 10 million jobs for Ugandans

The job creation pledge drew loud applause from the crowd, many of whom were youth and unemployed residents.

Attacks on Party Rebels

Kyagulanyi also urged Mityana voters to reject MPs Joyce Bagala and Richard Lumu, accusing them of straying from NUP’s core principles.

“Support only NUP flag bearers who believe in our vision,” he said.

Campaign Drama: Rain, Roadblocks, and Relocation

Earlier in the day, Kyagulanyi’s campaign trail was briefly disrupted by heavy rain and police roadblocks, which stopped his convoy from passing through the town centre where he had planned to open a new NUP office.

Authorities also barred the use of Mityana-Ssaza Grounds, forcing the party to shift the rally to Busubizi playground, about 5 km away. NUP leaders accused the district leadership of political interference, while the Deputy RDC Prossy Mwanjuzi defended the move as a security measure.

“This was a security precaution,” Mwanjuzi said. “We must maintain order and ensure everyone’s safety.”

Despite the challenges, Kyagulanyi arrived at the venue around 5:30 PM, officially launching his campaign in Buganda Region, considered NUP’s political stronghold.

What’s Next?

Bobi Wine’s rally in Mityana marks the beginning of a week-long campaign tour across Buganda. He is expected to hold similar events in Kassanda and Mubende districts in the coming days.
