Mpuuga’s Democratic Front Abandons Munyagwa, Endorses President Museveni
Kampala, 11 October 2025 — In a dramatic political shift, the Democratic Front (DF), led by Hon. Mathias Mpuuga, has officially withdrawn its support for Mubarak Munyagwa of the Common Man’s Party, instead endorsing incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa ahead of the upcoming general elections.
The announcement was made in a statement released by the party earlier today, signaling a major realignment in the opposition landscape.
Statement from the Democratic Front
“After extensive consultations and a thorough review of the current political environment, the Democratic Front, under the leadership of Mathias Mpuuga, has reconsidered its earlier decision to support Mubarak Munyagwa of the Common Man’s Party in the forthcoming elections,” the statement reads.
“Our assessment indicates that Munyagwa’s popularity remains low and his chances of winning are minimal. In the interest of national stability and progress, the Democratic Front has therefore decided to withdraw its support for Munyagwa and instead back the incumbent, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa, in the upcoming election.”
“We believe this decision reflects our commitment to unity, continuity, and the advancement of our nation’s development agenda. We call upon all Democratic Front members and supporters to stand firmly behind President Museveni and work collectively towards a peaceful and prosperous Uganda.”
A History of Political Shifts
The Democratic Front, formerly affiliated with the National Unity Platform (NUP), parted ways with the party earlier this year and opted not to field a presidential candidate of its own. At the time, DF declared its support for Munyagwa, a move that was seen as a gesture of solidarity among opposition forces.
However, today’s development marks a significant reversal, potentially weakening the already fractured opposition and boosting President Museveni’s prospects for re-election.
Implications for the 2026 Elections
The DF’s endorsement of President Museveni is expected to reshape campaign dynamics, especially in central regions where Mpuuga enjoys a loyal following. Political analysts suggest the move could consolidate support for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and present new challenges for opposition unity efforts.
As the country heads into a heated election season, the Democratic Front’s pivot underscores the unpredictable nature of Uganda’s political terrain.
