BREAKING NATIONAL: NUP Unveils Florence Asio as New Flag Bearer for Bukedea Woman MP Seat
The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially named Florence Asio as its new flag bearer for the Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament seat. The announcement was made on Monday, October 20, 2025, following the controversial removal of the party’s original candidate, Mercy Alupo, from the national voters’ register.
NUP has condemned Alupo’s removal as politically motivated, citing interference and sabotage allegedly orchestrated by the incumbent MP and Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among.
According to Harriet Chemutai, Chairperson of the NUP Election Management Committee, the party was left with no choice but to act.
“Mercy Alupo faced relentless interference that made it impossible for her to proceed. We are confident Florence Asio is a strong and capable leader who reflects the will of Bukedea’s people,” Chemutai stated.
NUP presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu directly blamed the Electoral Commission for failing to uphold electoral integrity, accusing it of collusion with the ruling party to suppress opposition voices.
“How can Anita Among manipulate the system, frustrate contenders, and still run as an independent with zero accountability?” Kyagulanyi questioned.
He further urged the Electoral Commission to break its silence on alleged electoral offences and demanded answers for what he termed “systemic political suppression.”
Kyagulanyi called on Bukedea residents to support Florence Asio, whom he described as a candidate of integrity and resistance.
The developments come amid growing tension in Bukedea, where opposition figures report continued intimidation, arrests, and voter manipulation. NUP is now calling for an independent investigation into both Alupo’s removal from the register and the overall conduct of the Electoral Commission in the district.
