BREAKING: Nine Killed as Landslides Hit Bukwo and Kween Districts
At least nine people, including six from the same family, have been confirmed dead following devastating landslides in Bukwo and Kween districts in eastern Uganda. The tragic incidents occurred after heavy rainfall battered the Sebei sub-region on Wednesday night.
In Bukwo district, three children were among the victims, tragically buried by mud in Nyalit Parish, Chesower Sub-county. The landslides, triggered by the downpour, left a trail of destruction, with transport along the Kapchorwa–Suam road severely disrupted. The SIT Bridge, a key link in the area, was buried under mud and debris swept away by floodwaters.

David Kapcheronge, the LC V councillor for Tuikat Sub-county in Kween, confirmed that four families were affected by the landslides. Six members of one family were killed, and several others sustained serious injuries. Local authorities, with the help of residents, have been working tirelessly to retrieve the bodies.
Sipi Region police spokesperson Fredmark Chesang confirmed that the bodies were taken to Bukwo Hospital mortuary for post-mortem. Search operations are ongoing as fears mount that more people could be trapped beneath the mud.

Authorities in both Bukwo and Kween districts have urgently appealed to the government and humanitarian agencies for assistance, as the heavy rains continue to threaten further landslides and flooding, putting more homes at risk.
