BREAKING: Electoral Materials Stolen from Butebo District Electoral Commission Office Amid Ongoing Renovations

The Butebo District Electoral Commission office has reported a major theft of electoral materials, including six lamps valued at 150,000 shillings each, raising fresh concerns about election security in the district.

According to Orichom John, the Election Assistant and Secretary for the Butebo District Electoral Commission, the incident occurred at the commission office currently undergoing renovation by the landlord, Mrs. Mwanamoiza Kikomeko Margaret.

The electoral materials, which were received on November 9, 2025, had been securely stored in one of the rooms within the premises. However, on November 21, 2025, painters removed the items to complete painting work and returned them later that evening. Orichom locked the room afterward but did not verify whether all items had been returned.

By November 27, 2025, Orichom and the office attendant discovered that six lamps were missing, prompting an immediate police report.

Wilfred Kyempasa, spokesperson for the Bukedi North Region Police, confirmed that investigators have opened a case file, visited the scene, and launched a full inquiry into the suspected theft. He noted that the painters—contracted by the landlord and residents of Kampala—are not known to the Electoral Commission staff, making them key persons of interest.

Police investigations are ongoing as authorities work to recover the stolen materials and strengthen security around electoral equipment.
