Teso Residents in Panic as Earthquake Shakes Eastern Uganda Region

Residents in Uganda’s Teso sub-region were thrown into panic after a surprise earthquake struck the area, sending tremors across several districts and forcing people to flee their homes and workplaces.

The earthquake, which occurred unexpectedly, was felt in multiple parts of the region, including Soroti, Kumi, Amuria, Katakwi, and neighboring districts. Witnesses reported experiencing strong ground shaking that lasted for several seconds, causing fear among residents.

Many people rushed outdoors as buildings vibrated and household items rattled. Some residents described the incident as one of the strongest tremors they had felt in recent years.

“We suddenly felt the ground moving beneath us. Everyone ran outside because we feared buildings could collapse,” said one resident in Soroti.

Authorities have not immediately reported any fatalities or major structural damage linked to the earthquake. However, local leaders and emergency response teams have begun assessing the situation to determine whether any infrastructure was affected.

The unexpected tremor sparked widespread discussion on social media, with residents sharing their experiences and expressing concern about possible aftershocks.

Uganda occasionally experiences earthquakes due to its location within the East African Rift System, a region known for geological activity. Experts often advise residents to remain calm during seismic events and follow safety guidelines issued by authorities.

Officials have urged the public to stay alert and report any damage to local authorities as assessments continue across the affected districts.

Further updates are expected as government agencies and disaster management teams gather more information about the earthquake and its impact on communities in the Teso region.
