Kizza Besigye Collapses in High Court During Treason Trial, Rushed to Hospital
KAMPALA, Uganda — Veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye was rushed to hospital by ambulance on Wednesday after collapsing inside the High Court in Kampala during the hearing of his treason case, forcing the court to suspend proceedings.
The dramatic incident occurred shortly after the trial began before Justice Emmanuel Baguma, where Besigye strongly objected to the proceedings, arguing that his constitutional right to legal representation had been violated.
Besigye Rejects State-Appointed Lawyers
Before the hearing could proceed, Besigye informed the court that he could not receive a fair trial because he had been denied access to lawyers of his own choosing.
His lead counsel, Erias Lukwago, is currently in prison after being charged with misprision of treason, making him unavailable to represent his client.
Besigye also noted that his Kenyan lawyer, Martha Karua, was unable to appear after reportedly being denied entry into Uganda.
Although the State assigned lawyers to represent him, Besigye declined the arrangement, insisting that only his long-standing legal team possessed the experience and trust necessary to handle his politically sensitive treason case.
He argued that compelling him to proceed with state-appointed counsel would compromise his constitutional right to a fair hearing.
Besigye Collapses in Court
Moments after proceedings commenced, Besigye suddenly collapsed inside the courtroom, causing panic among lawyers, judicial officers, supporters and members of the public who were present.
Medical personnel quickly responded before an ambulance transported the four-time presidential candidate to hospital for emergency treatment.
The court immediately halted the hearing as attention shifted to Besigye’s medical condition.
Justice Emmanuel Baguma suspended the proceedings, with no immediate update provided regarding the opposition leader’s health.
Growing Concerns Over Besigye’s Health
The courtroom incident has intensified public concern over Besigye’s health as he continues to face prosecution on treason charges.
Supporters and political allies have repeatedly expressed concern about his wellbeing, detention conditions and his ability to access legal representation of his choice throughout the court process.

Allegations Surrounding State Witness
The collapse comes just days after claims circulated regarding one of the prosecution’s witnesses, Andrew Orlando Wilson. Allegations suggested the witness was a mercenary who had been paid to fabricate evidence against Besigye.
Those claims have not been independently verified, and no court has established them as fact. The prosecution has continued with its case under the judicial process.
The treason proceedings are expected to resume once the court determines Besigye’s health status and his ability to participate in the trial.
