Six Family Members Killed by Lightning Strike in Maracha During Early Morning Storm

MARACHA, UGANDA — Six members of the same family have died after lightning struck their home in Nyanza Cell, Oleba Town Council, Maracha District, during an early morning thunderstorm.

The victims, comprising a father, mother and their four children, were reportedly killed at about 5:00 a.m. on Saturday when lightning struck their residence amid heavy rain.

The lightning strike reportedly triggered a fire that destroyed the family’s houses, leaving the community in shock.

Oleba Town Council LCIII Chairperson Robert Angupi confirmed the incident, describing it as a devastating loss for the Nyanza Cell community.

Preliminary reports indicate that all six family members were inside the residence when the lightning struck.

The victims’ bodies remained at the scene as local authorities carried out initial assessments and made arrangements for the handling of the remains in accordance with established procedures.

Community mourns entire family

Residents of Nyanza Cell expressed shock and grief after learning that an entire family had been wiped out in the lightning strike.

Community leaders have called for support for the relatives of the deceased as they come to terms with the tragedy.

The incident has also renewed concerns about the dangers posed by lightning during Uganda’s rainy seasons, particularly in rural communities where homes may have limited protection against lightning strikes.

Lightning strikes are a recurring hazard in Uganda, especially during periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
