Suspects Arrested Over Killing of Former Villa Player David Awori Express Regret
Suspects arrested in connection with the killing of former Uganda footballer David Awori have reportedly expressed regret, claiming they did not know they had attacked a well-known personality.
The suspects, who are allegedly linked to the notorious Kifeesi gang, were arrested following investigations into the death of Awori in Makindye, Kampala.
According to investigators, police detectives traced Awori’s stolen iPhone 14 Pro Max to Kisenyi, where the trail reportedly led them to several suspects believed to be connected to the robbery.
Suspects Claim They Did Not Know Awori
During questioning, the suspects reportedly admitted that they attacked Awori during a robbery but claimed they did not specifically target him because of his identity.
One of the suspects is quoted as saying:
“We are sorry… we didn’t know that we attacked someone popular in the country.”
The statement has reportedly formed part of the ongoing police investigations as detectives work to establish exactly what happened before, during and after the attack.
Police Link Suspects to Other Robberies
Investigators have reportedly linked the group to several other robbery incidents in Kampala.
Police believe some of the stolen mobile phones and other valuables were subsequently sold at different locations across the city.
The recovery trail involving Awori’s phone is said to have played an important role in helping detectives identify and arrest some of the suspects.
David Awori’s Death Shocks Uganda Football Community
Awori’s killing sent shockwaves through Uganda’s football community, with former teammates, friends, relatives and fans mourning the former SC Villa player and demanding justice.
His death has renewed concerns about violent robberies in Kampala and the activities of criminal gangs targeting members of the public for mobile phones and other valuables.
Police have confirmed that investigations are still ongoing. Detectives are expected to gather additional evidence and establish the individual roles of the suspects before they are taken through the court process.
The suspects remain subject to the law, and any allegations against them will have to be determined through the judicial process.
