13 Killed, 18 Injured in Horrific Toyota Hiace and Ford Transit Crash on Accra-Aflao Highway
At least 13 passengers have been killed and 18 others injured following a devastating road accident involving a Toyota Hiace and a Ford Transit at MotherKope on the Accra-Aflao Highway in Ghana.
The fatal accident occurred in the early hours of yesterday near God’s Love Herbal Clinic, sending shockwaves through the community and causing major disruption along the busy highway.
According to preliminary reports, the two vehicles were travelling in opposite directions when they collided on a hill.
The Toyota Hiace, with registration number GX 3186-20, was travelling from Accra towards Aflao, while the Ford Transit, registration number GW 5558-23, was travelling from Aflao towards Accra.
How the Deadly Accident Happened
The Tema Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Divisional Officer Grade II Ebenezer Yenzu, said preliminary information indicated that the Ford Transit collided with the side of the Toyota Hiace.
The impact of the collision caused extensive damage to both vehicles.
According to the fire service, the Toyota Hiace was severely damaged, with both its front and rear doors badly mangled in the crash.
The exact circumstances surrounding the accident are expected to be established through further investigations.
18 Passengers Rescued From Wreckage
DO II Yenzu confirmed that the driver of the Toyota Hiace was among those injured in the devastating crash.
Firefighters from the Sege Fire Station reportedly received a distress call at approximately 5:58 a.m. and quickly responded to the scene.
The rescue team arrived at around 6:06 a.m. and immediately began emergency rescue and extrication operations.
Firefighters successfully rescued 18 passengers who had been trapped inside the badly damaged vehicles.
The injured victims were rushed to Sege Polyclinic for emergency medical treatment.
Some Victims Referred for Further Treatment
Due to the seriousness of their injuries, some of the accident victims were later referred to the Ada East District Hospital at FaithKope for additional medical care.
Emergency teams worked to ensure that all survivors received the necessary medical attention following the horrific collision.
The condition of the injured victims had not been immediately disclosed.
Firefighters Clear Accident Scene
Following the rescue operation, personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service cleared the damaged vehicles and debris from the Accra-Aflao Highway.
The firefighters also cleaned the affected section of the road, including clearing spilled blood from the accident scene.
The operation helped restore the free flow of traffic along the busy highway.
The tragic accident has once again raised concerns about road safety and deadly crashes on major highways.
