Shocking Moment New Bridge Collapses During Opening Ceremony in Indonesia as Dozens Plunge
A newly inaugurated suspension bridge in Indonesia partially collapsed during its opening ceremony after dozens of people reportedly crowded onto the structure, triggering panic and leaving several people injured.
The frightening incident happened on Sunday at the Pongpet Suspension Bridge in Margacinta, West Java, as residents gathered to celebrate the opening of the new crossing.
Dramatic footage from the ceremony shows the bridge suddenly tilting sideways as people struggled to keep their balance. Some attendees fell while others desperately grabbed the sides of the bridge to avoid plunging into the area below.
Around 50 people were on the bridge
Reports indicate that approximately 50 people were crossing the bridge at the same time when the incident occurred.
The Indonesian Army, which was involved in the construction of the bridge, said the structure did not completely collapse.
Instead, a suspension cable on the left side reportedly became detached from its main anchor point, causing the bridge to tilt sharply.
Army Service Chief Brigadier General Donny Pramono said the main structure remained standing despite the frightening incident.
Authorities said the number of people on the bridge had exceeded its specified capacity.
The bridge was reportedly designed to accommodate only a small number of people at any one time, with officials saying that no more than three people should cross simultaneously.
Panic as bridge suddenly gives way
People on the bridge were reportedly caught off guard when it began swaying from side to side.
Margacinta village head Enceng Anwar Solihin was among those on the bridge when the structure started moving.
He recalled noticing the unusual movement shortly before the bridge dropped.
The incident sent people into a panic as some attempted to hold onto the bridge while others fell.
The structure was approximately 20 metres above the ground, according to reports.
Despite the dramatic scenes, authorities confirmed that there were no fatalities.
Several people sustained minor injuries, including Public Works Department chief Ling Ling Nugraha Senjaya, who reportedly suffered abrasions.
Officials blame overcrowding
Authorities said the bridge had a specified weight limit and that warnings had been issued before the opening.
However, the excitement surrounding the inauguration reportedly resulted in the restrictions being ignored.
The Indonesian Army said the large number of people crossing the bridge simultaneously exceeded its intended capacity.
Officials explained that the excessive load contributed to the suspension cable becoming detached from its anchoring system.
Despite describing the incident as a failure of the suspension cable rather than a complete structural collapse, authorities have closed the bridge while repairs and further assessments are carried out.
New bridge was built to connect local communities
The 60-metre-long Pongpet Suspension Bridge was constructed to improve transportation links for residents in the surrounding communities.
The crossing provides an important route for people travelling to schools, healthcare facilities and workplaces.
The incident has raised concerns about compliance with safety regulations during public events, particularly when newly constructed infrastructure is opened to large crowds.
Authorities are expected to assess the bridge before it is allowed to reopen to the public.
No deaths reported after Indonesia bridge incident
Although the footage of the bridge buckling has sparked alarm, officials confirmed that nobody died in the incident.
Several people suffered minor injuries, while emergency personnel responded to the scene.
The bridge remains closed as repair work is undertaken and officials examine its structural condition.
The incident has also prompted renewed attention to the importance of observing bridge capacity limits, particularly on suspension bridges where excessive loads can place additional stress on cables and anchoring systems.
