On the morning of the incident, Gitangwa reportedly left his home in Nyabite after informing his wife, Gladys Bonareri Achoki, that he was going to work as the master of ceremonies at a relative’s wedding.

He boarded a boda boda and was reportedly dropped off at Egesieri at around 9am.

From there, Gitangwa allegedly walked to the home of Agwata, a 33-year-old nurse who was working at Nyamaiya Health Centre.

Reports indicate that Agwata had called him to the house.

Gitangwa entered the compound alive.

He never returned home.

Neighbours Reportedly Heard Screams and Desperate Pleas

As the morning progressed, neighbours reportedly became concerned after hearing disturbing noises coming from the compound.

According to accounts from the area, there was prolonged screaming followed by sounds suggesting that a man was being attacked.

Gitangwa was allegedly heard desperately pleading for his life.

He reportedly asked why he had been called to the house only to be attacked and begged those involved to spare him.

Soon afterwards, everything went silent.

When neighbours later questioned Agwata about the disturbing sounds, she reportedly claimed that the noise had come from people celebrating the approaching New Year.

However, Gitangwa was no longer seen alive.

Body Found Two Days Later in Poultry Room

Two days later, on January 1, 2023, police reportedly forced their way into the house as investigations intensified.

What investigators allegedly discovered inside shocked many.

Gitangwa’s body was reportedly found inside a room that had been used for keeping poultry. The body had allegedly been covered with a purple carpet.

Investigators also found plastic bags and gunny sacks nearby, raising suspicions that those responsible may have been planning to move and dispose of the body.

According to the investigation, the suspected plan was never completed.

A post-mortem examination reportedly established that Gitangwa died from massive blood loss caused by serious injuries to the back of his head and neck.

Investigators further believed that the mutilation of the body happened after the fatal injuries had already been inflicted.

Investigators Follow Suspicious Money Transactions

As detectives continued investigating the Ezekiel Gitangwa murder case, attention reportedly turned to suspicious financial transactions involving his mobile phone.

Investigators allegedly discovered that money was withdrawn shortly after his death through intermediaries.

Among those reportedly questioned were a boda boda rider who allegedly received Sh4,000 before returning most of the money and an M-Pesa agent said to have handled another transaction.

Both intermediaries were reportedly arrested as detectives attempted to establish how money connected to Gitangwa was accessed after his death.

Sh2.8 Million Loan and Alleged Sh3 Million Debt Raise Questions

The investigation later uncovered a more complicated financial dispute.

Detectives reportedly established that Gitangwa had taken a loan of approximately Sh2.8 million from a teachers’ Sacco only days before his death.

He was also reportedly said to owe Agwata around Sh3 million.

According to investigators, there had allegedly been discussions about buying land using money Agwata received following the death of her husband, a Kenya Defence Forces officer.

However, Gitangwa was accused of using part of the money for his children’s school fees instead.

The alleged debt, the disputed land transaction and the relationship between the two reportedly became major areas of interest in the investigation.

Agwata and Her Boyfriend Reportedly Disappear

Following the discovery of Gitangwa’s body, Agwata reportedly switched off her phones and disappeared.

Detectives began tracing her movements using available information and phone signals.

Reports suggested that investigators believed she could have been attempting to leave Kenya through Tanzania before potentially travelling to other countries where she had previously lived.

By the middle of January 2023, investigators had reportedly lost track of her.

Another person linked to the case, Zablon Gekara, an NYS officer who was reportedly Agwata’s boyfriend, also disappeared.
