National Cleaning Day Turns Tragic as Police Officer Shoots Boda Boda Rider Dead in Ndejje
A routine National Cleaning Day exercise turned tragic in Ndejje, Kampala, after a police officer allegedly shot and killed a boda boda rider during enforcement of movement restrictions.
Uganda’s National Cleaning Day on Saturday, August 29, 2026, ended in tragedy in Kanaaba, Ndejje, within Katwe Police Division, after a police officer shot dead a boda boda rider during the morning cleaning exercise.
The incident reportedly happened at around 7:30 a.m. as residents participated in the monthly National Cleaning Day activities.
The victim has been identified as Ronald Kizito, 38, while the police officer accused of firing the fatal shot has been identified as Constable Allan Okello.
What Happened in Ndejje?
According to preliminary information released by police, Kizito was allegedly attempting to move through an area where movement had been restricted because of the National Cleaning Day exercise.
The monthly exercise is held on the last Saturday of every month, with authorities restricting movement during designated cleaning hours to allow communities to participate in sanitation activities.
Police had earlier clarified that only exempted categories of people and vehicles would be allowed to move during the restricted period.
Those exempted included tourists, medical workers, people seeking medical attention, journalists, long-distance trucks transporting merchandise, and other approved groups.
However, the situation in Kanaaba reportedly escalated when the boda boda rider attempted to pass through the restricted area.
It was during the confrontation that Constable Allan Okello allegedly opened fire, killing Kizito.
Police Officer Arrested
Following the shooting, police arrested Constable Okello and commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.
The Uganda Police Force said the officer remains in custody as investigators work to establish exactly what led to the shooting.
Police also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and said the circumstances and motive behind the shooting would be established through investigations.
In a statement regarding the incident, police said:
“The Uganda Police Force has registered and commenced investigations into a shooting incident that occurred on 29 August 2026 at around 7:30 a.m. at Ndejje Kanaaba, within Katwe Police Division.”
The force said further details would be provided as investigations progress.
National Cleaning Day
National Cleaning Day is observed on the last Saturday of every month as part of efforts to improve sanitation, cleanliness and public health across Uganda.
During the designated cleaning hours, authorities impose temporary restrictions on movement to enable communities to participate in cleaning activities without interference from traffic and other forms of movement.
The restrictions have, however, occasionally generated concerns among members of the public, particularly where individuals need to travel for work or other urgent activities.
The deadly incident in Ndejje has now raised fresh questions about how the restrictions are enforced and the measures police officers should take when dealing with people who violate them.
Authorities are expected to provide more information as investigations into the shooting continue.
